Members of the One Ilfracombe Team and the Mayor of Ilfracombe welcomed Rt Hon Don Foster, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Department Communities and Local Government, on a visit to Ilfracombe today (6 June). The minister was shown around the town and was given the opportunity to discuss the hard work of the One Ilfracombe team.
The minister, along with key members of the One Ilfracombe team, Pride In Ilfracombe winner Ivan Frances and Harbour Master, Lt Cdr Rob Lawson also watched the Waverley set sail from Ilfracombe harbour.
Rt Hon Don Foster MP, on his visit to Ilfracombe said:
“I have been very impressed with the approach and achievements of Ilfracombe as one of my Department’s twelve Neighbourhood Community Budget pilots. The aim of these pilots was to show that decentralising control over the design and delivery of local public services to neighbourhoods has the potential to improve the quality of those services, make them more responsive to local needs, increase user-satisfaction and reduce costs – getting ‘more and better for less’.
I am delighted to visit Ilfracombe today to see first hand the fantastic work they are doing and hear about how the community are coming together with the public sector to improve things in Ilfracombe – whether that is the appearance of the town, finding work for local youngsters or volunteers coming forward to support isolated elderly and vulnerable residents.
I am pleased to be able to announce that we have made available a further £65,000 to support Ilfracombe in making their Operational Plan a reality, and I look forward to hearing about their progress.”
Chairman of the One Ilfracombe board, Ilfracombe Town Councillor Ron Ley, said: “One Ilfracombe’s pioneering programme is about local people regaining influence over how public services are delivered in our town. Working with agencies and our fantastic community we will change how we look after people, their health, job prospects and the environment they live in.
We are extremely proud to have been chosen as a national pilot and thank the Government for recognising and continuing to back our ambitious plan, that will serve all our residents better for generations to come.”
