We will be holding a health and wellbeing month called ‘Spring into Action’ during March 2017. Our aim is to let our residents promote all the services which people could use to improve their current health and wellbeing and also prevent health issues further down the line.

If you would like your group or organisation to have a stand at the opening event to promote your service please fill in the attached form and email it to charmain.lovett@northdevon.gov.uk

Registration form for stands

Many groups and organisations have been identified as providing a valuable service which may be able to help improve the health statistics of Ilfracombe residents whether that be by reducing harmful behaviour such as smoking or drinking, taking action to keep residents safe and well in their own home or encouraging people to exercise more and improve their overall health. The main aim of this project is to encourage our residents to become more active whether that’s by joining a club or building confidence to leave the house and get involved. We will therefore be focusing on the ‘well being’ of all of our residents, in which ever form that takes.

Some of the startling statistics highlighted through the health needs assessment include;

  • Ilfracombe Central Ward has the shortest life expectancy in Devon at 74.6 years (compared to Newton Poppleford and Harpford which has an 89.6 year life expectancy).
  • 31% of adults in Ilfracombe Central Ward smoke
  • 6 % of adults in the Combe Coastal area are classed as obese
  • High rates of hypertension, chronic heart disease, strokes and mental health issue

We are hoping that services and groups will be happy to promote themselves or even offer reduced rate/ free trial sessions of their service/initiative as a way of encouraging residents to try something new and maybe find an activity which they can take part in on a longer term basis. Alongside these taster sessions, we are planning on a range of other free activities such as healthy eating cooking classes with local chefs, promotion of NHS and emergency service initiatives as well as a host of other events throughout the month.

The month will be kicked off with a free health and wellbeing event being held on Wednesday 1st March 2 pm – 8 pm in the Lantern, Ilfracombe.  We are inviting all interested parties to have stands to promote their services and any initiatives they have going on. Community wide promotion of this event will hopefully encourage as many people as possible to attend.

If you are interested in having a stand, please could you complete the booking form attached and return by email to Hannah.mcdonald@northdevon.gov.uk by Monday 16th January 2017. Any queries please feel free to get in contact.
